The Journey Where the Power of Spirituality and Inner Peace Come Together
Meaning and Significance of Char Dham Yatra

Meaning and Significance of Char Dham Yatra

Char Dham Yatra is one of the must-visit pilgrimages in the Hindu religion that every person must visit at least once in their lifetime to wash their sins and achieve salvation. Char Dhams or Chatur Dhams are four holy abodes that represent the four yugas. The literal meaning of the term ‘Char Dham’ is four holy shrines or abodes of God.

Pilgrims start their journey from Yamunotri then visit famous Gangotri, followed by the Kedarnath Dham, and complete the pilgrimage at the Badrinath Dham. After completing this religious journey, the pilgrim achieves immense peace of their mind.

Why Four Holy Destinations are Followed in a Sequence?

Why Four Holy Destinations are Followed in a Sequence?

According to Hindu mythology, Shri Adi Shankaracharya obtains freedom from reincarnation at the Shri Badrinath Dham. Yamunotri Dham is located at the source of River Yamuna (Yamraj’s sister in Hindu mythology). On Bhai Dooj, he promised her sister that whoever takes a dip in this river will never be taken to Yamlok and achieve salvation.

Gangotri Dham is situated at Gomukh, the source of the pure River Ganga. Taking a dip in the river Ganga wash away a person's sins and clasp goodness. Kedarnath, the land of serenity, spiritual enlightenment, and peace, is one of the 12 jyotirlingas of God Shiva. Badrinath Dham, the final shrine of the Char Dham Yatra, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Best Time for Char Dham Yatra

Since the temples of Char Dham are located at high peaks, there is heavy snowfall during the winter months. That’s a reason the shrines close during winter. April-June and October/November are the best months to embark on Char Dham Yatra.

The exact timing (opening and closing dates) is decided by the Mandir Samiti on Maha Shivaratri. Avoiding yatra during monsoon months i.e. July and August is recommended as the region experiences landslides and rainfall during this period. The availability of helicopter Char Dham yatra depends on the weather and opening & closing dates.

Best Places to Visit During Char Dham Yatra

Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath are the four main Hindu pilgrimage destinations covered during Char Dham Yatra. Apart from these sites, you can visit the three most popular Hindu rivers of India – Ganga, Mandakini, and Alaknanda. Hindus also perform rituals at these rivers for their deceased family members.

You can enjoy scenic views of lush green valleys, snow-covered mountains, and thick forests to have an everlasting delightful experience. Every journey consists of a stop at Haridwar which is known for its Harki Paurighat and Ganga Aarti. Vaishno Devi Temple, Chandi Devi Temple, SaptarshiGhat, and Mansa Devi Temple are major attractions in Haridwar.
